A short story: Panginomnomnoman Ki Aginaya
(2nd Creative Tree Planting 2013)
Date:November 6-9
9am-12 Pm
Km.5 Asin Road Baguio City
A long time ago in Ifugao, there lived a hardworking woman named Aginaya. She and her children worked industriously in their rice fields.
But between planting and harvest seasons, they had nothing to do.
To keep busy, they sculpted wood into bulols, human like figures into which sickness was purged.
They also carved attractive kitchen utensils, these were a huge hit and there was a great demand for them.
So Aginayas family cut down more trees as their woodcarving business began to grow.
One night, an aging ailing Aginaya dreamt that instead of hair, her head was lushly covered with varied trees.
Then uneasily, she noticed the trees were vanishing off her head until she grew quite bald.
When she awoke, the troubled Aginaya revealed her dream to her husband and they decided to invite elders to help. During the ritual, the gods came down from the skyworld to warn them about the dwindling number of trees.
..If you do not plant, you too will perish they pronounced.
People of the Ili talked it over, without trees, there would be nothing to hold the water that went to their rice fields.
If the paddies dried out, there would be no rice to harvest and everyone would go hungry.
From then on, the people decided to plant as many trees as possible. Up to this day, Aginayaès descendants continue her advocacy of planting trees.
